1. Essential Hiking Gear

Sturdy Hiking Boots

Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots are a must. The terrain in the Rockies can be rugged and uneven, so ensure your footwear provides ample support and grip. If you do end up shopping for some new boots, we suggest wearing them in a little before setting out on the trails.

Layered Clothing

The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and this is an understatement…it can snow every month of the year. You’ll also find that the seasons are a little different with regard to timing than elsewhere in the world. We find that in general people underestimate how slow summer is to kick in and how much time it can take for the winter snowpack to melt. Famous lakes remain frozen for longer than expected and incredible hikes remain inaccessible. Pack moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers to stay comfortable in varying conditions and if in doubt, just ask us what to expect.

Backpack

A good-quality backpack with enough space to carry all your essentials is crucial. Look for one with padded straps and a waist belt for added comfort. Generally speaking, if you are packing for a day hike then a 15-35L pack is best, depending how much stuff you have. If you are planning and packing for a multi day hike then you will find it better to have a 50L-75L pack, again depending on your gear, length of trip and personal strength. It’s great to think ahead and get some clips, carabiners or straps to bring your dress or suit if needed.

2. Wedding Attire

Wedding Dress and/or Suit

Choose attire that is both beautiful and practical. Consider lightweight, breathable fabrics for your dress and suit. Also, think about how well your outfit will move with you as you hike and take photos. Of course, don’t fight against your personal style and taste but do consider your ability to move freely, especially around the legs if you need to take longer strides or big steps.

Comfortable Shoes for Photos

While hiking boots are essential for the trail, bring a pair of stylish yet comfortable shoes for your photos. Think flats, sandals, or even barefoot options for a natural, romantic look. Alternatively, if you want to bring your heels then let us know as we can give you a good idea if your location will have any suitable areas for your desired footwear. Dress shoes are fine but believe it or not, dress shoes are often worse in terms of slips and falls on rock so if you do want to wear dress shoes then think about getting the soles scuffed to get some extra traction!

Accessories

Keep accessories minimal and functional. Personal vow books, a flower crown or small bouquet, simple jewelry, and a veil are great examples that can be easily managed and packed without taking up too much room.

3. Safety and First Aid

First Aid Kit

Pack a basic first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, blister treatment, and any personal medications you might need. It may feel like overkill but it is just one of those things that you would rather have and not need than the other way around.

Sun Protection

The sun can be more intense at higher elevations so be prepared with sunscreen, appropriate layers and even sunglasses and a hat so you can stay comfortable when the sun is out.

Hydration and Snacks

Staying hydrated and energized is crucial. Carry plenty of water and pack high-energy snacks like trail mix, energy bars, and fruit. We’ve often found that on wedding and elopement days, couples neglect the water and snacks as they’re so wired on the experience only to tire quickly as the days goes on. Be prepared so you sip water often and easily grab a quick bite if you need it.

4. Photography and Keepsakes

Extra Clothing for Photos

Consider bringing an extra change of clothes to switch into after your ceremony and photos. This way, you can stay fresh and comfortable for the hike back if you prefer to hike without your wedding attire on.

Props and Decor

Simple, lightweight props can add a personal touch to your photos. Think about bringing a small bouquet, a handwritten note, or a special blanket to sit on.

Personal Touches

Include sentimental items like a piece of heirloom jewelry, a locket with a photo, or a charm to make your elopement uniquely yours. This is often the perfect way to include your closest family and friends without them physically being there.

5. Practical Items

Headlamp or Flashlight

If you’re starting your hike early in the morning or returning late, a headlamp or flashlight is essential for safety. Choose one with adjustable brightness and a comfortable headband. Be sure to check that you have fully charged batteries!

Trash Bags

A simple trash bag in your pack is best so you can take out all your waste, including any food wrappers and packaging.

Multi-tool

A multi-tool can be handy for a variety of unexpected situations, from cutting fabric to opening a celebratory drink.

Lightweight Blanket

A lightweight, packable blanket can be a lifesaver. It can be used for a quick rest, a picnic, or even as a wrap to keep warm during chilly moments.

Insect Repellent

Depending on the season, bugs can be a nuisance. Pack a small bottle of insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay, ensuring your focus remains on each other and the breathtaking views. If you didn’t know, don’t use deet as it can break down the plastics on waterproof layers like Goretex.

Power Bank and/or Portable Phone Charger

Now this one is really for those multi day trips so you can keep your phone battery topped up so you can use your phone for personal photos and videos if you want to!

Hand Warmers

One of our number one items for our couples! Suitable any time of year, hand warmers can be incredibly useful. Slip them into your gloves or pockets to keep your hands toasty warm during your hike and ceremony.

Your hiking elopement in the Canadian Rockies should be as magical and stress-free as possible. By packing thoughtfully and being prepared for the elements, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience together.
