More specifically, you’re here because you want to elope somewhere in the mountains and you’re in good company. Having made our home in mountain towns for over 15years, it’s no secret that we love the landscapes, the adventures and the possibilities for ways to celebrate. We’ve taken the time to bring these places together in one, easy to use list. We know for sure that there will be some bucket list places that you’ve heard of, and equally some not so well known spots too. Couples eloping internationally face a unique mix of emotional, legal, and logistical challenges and luckily, you’re in good company with us. We solved all of our challenges ourselves when we went through the planning stages of our own international heli elopement, including the paperwork to have a completely legal marriage high up in the Southern Alps in New Zealand. (It won’t be a surprise to see it make our list!). With that experience behind us, we know how to navigate these logistics and help you shape a surreal experience like no other. If you are starting your research and are in the early stages, here’s a list of other things you may not have thought of when it comes to travelling internationally for your mountain elopement.
1. Legal Requirements
Marriage legality: Ensuring their marriage will be legally recognized both in the destination country and back home.
Paperwork: Navigating foreign bureaucracy, translations, notarizations, and potential waiting periods.
Residency requirements: Some countries require couples to be in the country for a minimum time period before legally marrying.
2. Travel Logistics
Passports & visas: Making sure both partners (and any guests) have the proper travel documents.
Health-related entry rules: Some destinations still have requirements around vaccinations and/or insurance.
Flight and accommodation planning: Coordinating travel during peak tourist seasons or to remote locations.
3. Language & Cultural Barriers
Communication: Understanding local customs, navigating language differences with vendors or officials.
Ceremony traditions: Knowing what's appropriate or legal (e.g., religious vs. civil ceremonies).

Without a little guidance from experienced minds, this can feel a little overwhelming and there is definitely a fine line between doing activities for the sake of it vs. enjoying a day that feels authentic to you.

Albania, Accursed Mountains
An unknown gem when it comes to hiking and getting lost in the mountains. With dramatic peaks, a well established trail network and their fare share of alpine lakes, you’d be forgiven for confusing this for some more well known mountain locations in the world. This country is becoming more well known in recent years and we think it will be found on bucket list travel locations in no time. Plus, it’s tough to beat Albania for budget and bang for buck. Antarctica
Hear us out...if you're the kind of couple who’s always up for an adventure, Antarctica might just be the boldest and most unique elopement spot on earth. It’s wild, untouched, incredibly humbling and from all the places we’ve travelled, really is like visiting another world. You’ll reach Antarctica by cruise (often from Ushuaia, Argentina), and while you won’t be legally getting married on the continent (that’s usually done beforehand), the symbolism of saying vows on the seventh continent is surreal. A huge draw for couples exploring a unique experience is that you we doubt you’ll meet anyone else who has eloped here before.

Argentina & Chile, Patagonia
Patagonia is legendary among adventurers for a reason. Towering granite peaks, massive glaciers, and constantly shifting weather create a landscape that feels powerful and untamed. Areas like Torres del Paine and El Chaltén are famous for their hiking routes and dramatic mountain views. It’s the kind of place where nature truly feels bigger than everything else.

Australia, Glass House Mountains
Rising dramatically from the landscape of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, the Glass House Mountains are a series of volcanic peaks that feel surprisingly wild despite their proximity to the coast. Iceland, Landmannalaugar & Highlands
If you’re drawn to landscapes that feel completely otherworldly, Iceland’s highlands might be hard to beat. Landmannalaugar is famous for its colourful rhyolite mountains, steaming geothermal vents, and winding hiking trails that feel like they belong on another planet. Access requires a bit more effort, but that’s part of the magic — fewer crowds and a landscape that feels truly wild. For adventurous couples, the Icelandic highlands offer something unforgettable.

Iceland, Thórsmörk Valley

Nepal, Himalayas
While Everest gets most of the attention, Nepal’s Himalayas offer countless incredible regions beyond the famous base camp trek. The scale of the Himalayas is truly hard to comprehend until you experience it firsthand.

New Zealand, Aoraki (Mt. Cook)
We’re pretty biased when it comes to New Zealand, having lived and worked there for nearly a decade, we know it inside and out from a living locals perspective. For that reason, you’ll find NZ features a couple of times on this list and first up is Aoraki. If you haven’t been to this region, also known as Mt. Cook, it really is something special. There’s a bunch of great hiking trails, easy access to glacier views, scenic flights and glacial landings and the most under-rated activity in the area…star gazing. The tough reality of the area is that statistically, 1 in 3 days is overcast and rainy.

New Zealand, Milford Sound
Few places feel as powerful and humbling as Milford Sound. Towering cliffs rise straight from the ocean, waterfalls tumble down sheer rock faces, and misty rainforests blanket the surrounding mountains. While it’s one of New Zealand’s most visited natural attractions, the scale of the landscape still makes it feel incredibly wild.

New Zealand, Wanaka & Queenstown
Wanaka and Queenstown sit at the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps and are surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes. Legal Marriage vs Symbolic Elopements
As we’ve already mentioned, couples often don’t realize when planning an international elopement is that marriage laws vary widely from country to country. Some destinations require residency, multiple appointments, translations, or extended stays before a legal ceremony can take place. Because of that, many couples choose a much simpler route. They sign the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony in the mountains instead. It keeps the focus on the experience rather than the bureaucracy and can significantly reduce any unnecessary stress in the whole experience.
