5 Reasons to Get Engaged or Married in Fall in the Rockies

Fall (or Autumn as we know it) is a magical time of year which is heavily underrated in our opinion. It’s the time of year when the mornings get cold, the flowers have wilted and you really get the feel that change is in the air. Fall is an exciting transition from Summer to Winter and brings with it some of our favorite things to look forward to in the Rockies. Here’s a quick look at our top 5 reasons to get engaged or married in Fall.

Golden Colours

Hands down this has to be our ultimate reason to choose Fall to elope. There’s many species of flora, indigenous to the Rockies that go through their seasonal change and the colourful display we get to enjoy from it really is a treat. Most famously is the larch tree which has given us locals here the term “larch season”. These special trees turn an incredible golden orange and bring people from far and wide just to catch a glimpse of the mountain landscapes going through this transition. The key to larch season is to know where to go as they aren’t everywhere and depending on seasonal temperatures will only last around 10-14 days until they drop their needles. If you thought summer’s wildflowers were pretty, you haven’t seen larch season in full flow!

First Snowfall

We know it’s not winter yet but hear us out on this one. Fall is a pretty unique time of year given that there’s usually a good chance of a hearty snowfall. With all the fall colours splashed around, add a fresh blanket of white snow and the colour contrast is outstanding. This is obviously a lot harder to plan for but incredible when it happens. At this time of year it’s quite normal for the lakes to still be thawed until later in the winter so the possibilities of crisp, mirror like lakes are also high on the list with that fresh snowfall.

Quieter Tourist Hotspots

Once Summer starts to trail away, we move into what a lot of seasonal workers refer to as shoulder season. It’s the time of year when the towns get quieter and the number of visitors to our outdoor spaces starts to dwindle. The colder temps in the mornings and the more turbulent weather keep more people away. This opens up more opportunities for those that really enjoy their peace and quiet in the great outdoors. During our peak months, some of our iconic locations will leave some couples feeling like they’re a little on display. Local knowledge can do you the world of good here being able to show you location options you didn’t even know existed. That said, if you want a more well known location but without the crowds then consider shoulder season as a good place to start.

Return of Dark Skies

As the seasons change, so does our number of daylight hours. After what feels like a long Summer of going to bed when it’s light and waking up when it’s light this can be a real treat for starlight lovers. We’re huge fans of spending time under the stars and as astrophotography specialists if you’re looking for something completely unique then that’s where we come in.

Vibrant Sunrises and Sunsets

Fall is an amazing time of year to roll the dice on capturing a vibrant and colourful sunrise or sunset. The approaching winter and change in seasons brings about turbulent weather patterns and with it some amazing cloud formations. It’s all about reading the weather radars and predicting the best place to be to watch the show. This is a huge part of our planning process with our couples and with years of experience out in the mountains we tend to find ourselves in the right place at the right time!
