Can You Legally Get Married on a Mountain in Banff? How to Make Your Canadian Rockies Elopement Official
If you’re dreaming of exchanging vows on a mountaintop in the Canadian Rockies, you might be wondering, can you actually get legally married up there? The short answer is yes!
Whether you’re envisioning an intimate hiking elopement, a helicopter-accessed ceremony or a quiet spot with panoramic views, you can absolutely make it official. Here’s what you need to know to ensure your mountain celebration is both breathtaking and legally recognized.
1. The Legal Requirements for Getting Married in the Canadian Rockies
To have a legally recognized wedding in Alberta or British Columbia, you’ll need to meet a few key requirements:
Marriage License - You must obtain a marriage license from the province where your ceremony will take place. In Alberta, licenses are valid for 90 days and must be picked up in person from a registry office. In British Columbia, the process is similar, and the license is valid for three months.
Officiant - A licensed officiant must perform your ceremony. This can be a religious or civil officiant, a marriage commissioner, or a recognized Indigenous leader. If you are celebrating in Alberta, you can hire an officiant from anywhere in the province to perform the ceremony anywhere in the province. In contrast, in BC, the officiants are tied to a specific region/town so you’ll have to do your homework to find the right one. There are ways around this so reach out if you’re stuck as we’ve help out with this process before.
Witnesses - You’ll need two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign your marriage documents. Typically, for our celebrations, we are more than happy to be witnesses and sign your paperwork for you.
Location Considerations - While you can legally marry almost anywhere, some areas (especially within national and provincial parks) may require special permits for ceremonies. If you need help figuring out if you fall within one of these areas let us know, as it isnt’ always straight forward to find the information you need online.
2. Can You Marry on a Mountain? Absolutely! Here’s How.
The beauty of the Canadian Rockies is that your wedding location can be as adventurous or as accessible as you want. Here are a few ways to say ‘I do’ at altitude:
Hiking Elopements - If you’re up for a hike, you can exchange vows on a summit or in an alpine meadow with breathtaking views. Some popular spots include Big Beehive in Lake Louise, Ha Ling Peak in Canmore, or Wilcox Pass in Jasper. With that said, we cannot say enough times to couples just how many unreal options there are out there and we’ve got some real gems that we’ve never seen elopements at before which we’d love to introduce to the perfect couple
Helicopter Elopements - For a truly epic experience, take a helicopter to a remote mountain peak. Several heli-tour companies in Alberta and BC offer elopement packages that take you to breathtaking, secluded spots. We’ve had the pleasure of working with many teams and have developed a great relationship with these heli teams. From this experience, we can let you know what to expect with each company and also how the terrain varies as there really is quite a variety of landing options to suit all tastes.
Ski Resort & Gondola Weddings - If you want those mountaintop views without the hike, consider a ski resort or gondola-accessible location, such as the Banff Gondola, Lake Louise Ski Resort, or Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Whilst the summer season can provide you with many options, it’s during the winter that these really come into their own. Why not combine your love for each other with some time on the slopes! Drive-Up Lookouts - For couples wanting a scenic ceremony with easy access, locations like Peyto Lake Viewpoint or Tunnel Mountain in Banff offer incredible backdrops with minimal effort. Whilst these aren’t your typical “summits”, they do provide a beautiful elevated view of their surrounding areas.
3. Banff National Park Wedding Permits & Park Regulations
If you’re getting married in a national or provincial park, you may need a special-use permit for your ceremony. Here’s what to check:
Banff, Jasper, Yoho & Kootenay National Parks - A Parks Canada wedding permit may be required, especially for larger gatherings.
Provincial Parks (Alberta & BC) - Some parks allow ceremonies without a permit, while others require advance approval. Always check local regulations before finalizing your location.
Leave No Trace - Many remote mountain locations have strict environmental guidelines. Avoid confetti, ensure you pack out all waste, and respect the natural surroundings. At the end of the day, your goal is to have minimal to zero lasting negative impact on the area, flora and fauna.
4. What If You Want to Skip the Legalities?
Some couples choose to do the legal paperwork at home before or after their mountain ceremony, treating the outdoor vows as a symbolic commitment. This is a great option for all couples if you have a couple of key criteria to look after:
You want to include your family/friends for the actual ceremony. You may have accessibility concerns for those, or yiou may simply want to get the best of both worlds.
You choose a location more remote so that having an officiant join isn’t so straight forward.
